ELIZABETH CATLETT

Elizabeth Catlett (1915 - ) was born in Washington, D.C., the granddaughter of slaves, so her heritage identifies with the struggles of the exploited and their fight for freedom and equality. Catlett’s art compassionately depicts the realities of poverty, the exhaustion of workers and the concerns of mothers for their children.

Catlett graduated from Howard University and received a Masters in Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. She won a Julius Rosenwald Fellowship, making it possible for her to go to Mexico in 1946, where she joined the Taller de Grafica Popular (Peoples Graphic Art Workshop, a group of artists who worked collectively to maintain the social and political goals of the Mexican Revolution, such as fighting fascism and ending illiteracy. Because linoleum blocks are plentiful and inexpensive and can produce high volume images, Catlett exploited this medium and its ability to achieve detailed areas of different linear patterns, boldly contrasting black and white.
